Knitted Short Overalls And Matching Sunhat - Pattern & pdf File

Supplies

~ Worsted weight yarn, 4-ply, any two colors you want

~ Size 8 (5 mm) knitting needles

~ Size 5.5 mm crochet hook

~ Stitch holder

~ Yarn needle

~ 13 buttons of your choice, consisting of 1 large button, 2 medium buttons, and 10 small buttons

~ Sewing needle and thread; only needed if the holes of the buttons you choose are too small to be sewn on with the knitting yarn and the yarn needle


Abbreviations

~ c1 - color one; the main color for the overalls and the hat

~ c2 - color two; the secondary color for the pockets and the hat band

~ st - stitch

~ sts - stitches

~ k - knit

~ p - purl

~ yo - yarn over

~ m 1 st - make one stitch

~ stockinette sts - knit one row, purl one row

~ garter sts - knit all rows

~ k2tog - knit two stitches together

~ ch - chain

~ sc - single crochet

Instructions

* Please note: We will be working from the top down, starting with the bib, and ending with the legs. The straps will be knitted directly onto the edge of the back bib by picking up stitches *


~ Overalls ~

Front

~ With knitting needles and c1 cast on 16 sts

~ Work 2 rows in garter sts

~ Row 1 - k 2 sts, k2tog, k 8 sts, k2tog, k 2 sts

~ Row 2 - k 2 sts, p 10 sts, k 2 sts

~ Row 3 - k 2 sts, yo, k 10 sts, yo, k 2 sts

~ Row 4 - k 3 sts, p to last 3 sts, k 3 sts (front bib button holes made)

~ Row 5 - k across to end of row

~ Rows 6-13 - repeat rows 4 and 5

~ Row 14 - k 3 sts, p to last 3 sts, k 3 sts (front bib finished)

~ Row 15 - after finishing row 14, cast on 6 sts, then k across to end of row = 22 sts (see picture 1)

~ Row 16 - after finishing row 15, cast on 6 sts, then k across to end of row = 28 sts (see picture 2)

~ Rows 17-19 - k across to end of row

~ Row 20 - k 2 sts, p to last 2 sts, k 2 sts

~ Row 21 - k across to end of row

~ Rows 22-41 - repeat rows 20 and 21

~ Row 42 - k 2 sts, p to last 2 sts, k 2 sts (body finished)

~ Row 43 - k 14 sts, place remaining 14 sts on stitch holder

~ Rows 44-49 - work in stockinette sts

~ Rows 50 & 51 - work in garter sts

~ Cast off (first leg finished)

~ Transfer remaining 14 sts back to knitting needle

~ With right side (k side) facing you, join yarn into first st on knitting needle, k across to end of row

~ Repeat rows 44-51

~ Cast off (second leg finished)

* Please note: If you want your overalls to be longer, keep adding rows of stockinette sts between row 49 and row 50, until desired length is achieved. Do the same for the back piece of the overalls *


Back

~ With knitting needles and c1 cast on 10 sts

~ Work 3 rows in garter sts

~ Row 1 - k 3 sts, p to last 3 sts, k 3 sts

~ Row 2 - k across to end of row

~ Rows 3-8 - repeat rows 1 and 2

~ Row 9 - k 1 st, m 1 st, k 2 sts, p to last 3 sts, k 2 sts, m 1 st, k 1 st = 12 sts

~ Row 10 - k across to end of row

~ Row 11 - k 1 st, m 1 st, k 2 sts, p to last 3 sts, k 2 sts, m 1 st, k 1 st = 14 sts

~ Row 12 - k across to end of row

~ Row 13 - k 1 st, m 1 st, k 2 sts, p to last 3 sts, k 2 sts, m 1 st, k 1 st = 16 sts

~ Row 14 - k across to end of row (back bib finished)

~ Row 15 - after finishing row 14, cast on 6 sts, then k across to end of row = 22 sts (see picture 1)

~ Row 16 - after finishing row 15, cast on 6 sts, then k across to end of row = 28 sts (see picture 2)

~ Rows 17-18 - k across to end of row

~ Row 19 - k 2 sts, p to last 2 sts, k 2 sts

~ Row 20 - k across to end of row

~ Rows 21-42 - repeat rows 19 and 20 (body finished)

~ Row 43 - p 14 sts, place remaining 14 sts on stitch holder

~ Rows 44-49 - work in stockinette sts

~ Rows 50 & 51 - work in garter sts

~ Cast off (first leg finished)

~ Transfer remaining 14 sts back to knitting needle

~ With right side (k side) facing you, join yarn into first st on knitting needle, k across to end of row

~ Repeat rows 44-51

~ Cast off (second leg finished)


Straps

Strap 1:

~ With knitting needles, c1, and left side (p side) of back bib facing you, join yarn and pick up 4 sts, starting with the first st and going to the fourth st along the top right edge of the back bib

~ Rows 1-40 - work in garter sts

~ Cast off

Strap 2:

~ With knitting needles, c1, and right side (k side) of back piece facing you, join yarn and pick up 4 sts, starting with the first st and going to the fourth st along the top right edge of the back bib

~ Rows 1-40 - work in garter sts

~ Cast off

 
Pockets (make 5)

~ With crochet hook and c2 chain 4

~ Row 1 - starting in second ch from hook, sc 3, ch 1, turn = 3 sc

~ Row 2 - 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn = 5 sc

~ Row 3 - sc across to end of row, ch 1, turn

~ Row 4 - 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn = 7 sc

~ Row 5 - sc across to end of row, ch 1, turn

~ Row 6 - 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn = 9 sc

~ Row 7 - sc across to end of row, fasten off, leaving a tail long enough to sew the pocket to the overalls


Finishing The Overalls

~ Sew one small button to the front of 4 pockets; then sew the 4 pockets to the overalls in the front and back, leaving the top open in order to create working pockets

~ Sew the large button to the front of the 5th pocket; then sew the pocket to the front bib of the overalls, leaving the top open in order to create a working pocket

~ Sew the medium buttons approximately 3 rows down from the ends of the straps, making sure the buttons are facing the front bib button holes

~ With wrong sides (p sides) facing you, sew the overalls front and back together on each side, starting with the waist and going down to the end of the legs

~ With wrong sides (p sides) facing you, sew the inseam of the legs together

~ Turn the overalls right side out, and sew 3 small buttons to the mock button band on each side of the overalls, between the waist and the beginning of the leg

~ Weave in all ends

~ Sun Hat ~

~ With knitting needles and c1 cast on 80 sts

~ Rows 1-8 - work in garter sts

~ Switch to c2

~ Row 9 - k2tog, repeat until end of row = 40 sts

~ Rows 10-12 - work in garter sts

Row 13 - k 4 sts, m 1 st, repeat until end of row = 50 sts

~ Rows 14-16 - work in stockinette sts; start row 14 with p

~ Switch to c1

~ Rows 17-29 - Work in stockinette sts

~ Row 30 - p 3 sts, p2tog, repeat until end of row = 40 sts

~ Row 31 - k 2 sts, k2tog, repeat until end of row = 30 sts

~ Row 32 - p 1 st, p2tog, repeat until end of row = 20 sts

~ Row 33 - k2tog, repeat until end of row = 10 sts

~ Cut long string, thread onto yarn needle

~ Pull yarn needle with string through 10 remaining sts, slide knitting needle out, and pull yarn tight to close

~ With wrong side (p side) facing you, sew back seam closed

~ Sew 3 different sized buttons from largest to smallest to the side of the hat onto the hatband

~ Weave in all ends
