Supplies

~ Worsted Weight Yarn, 3-medium. You can use any color combinations you choose

~ Size 8 (5.00 mm) knitting needles

~ Yarn needle


Abbreviations

~ st - stitch

~ sts - stitches

~ k - knit

~ kfb - knit front and back

~ garter sts - knit all rows

~ stockinette sts - knit one row, purl one row

~ k2tog - knit two stitches together

~ p2tog - purl two stitches together

Instructions

Hat Body

~ Cast on 40 sts

~ Rows 1-3 - work in garter sts

~ Row 4 - *k2sts, kfb 1 st*, repeat from * to * until 1 st remains, k 1 st = 53 sts

~ Rows 5-24 - work in stockinette sts, start row 5 with p

~ Row 25 - *p 2 sts, p2tog*, repeat from * to * until 1 st remains, p 1 st = 40 sts

~ Row 26 - *k 2 sts, k2tog*, repeat from * to * until end of row = 30 sts

~ Row 27 - *p 1 st, p2tog*, repeat from * to * until end of row = 20 sts

~ Row 28 - *k2tog*, repeat until end of row = 10 sts

~ Cut long string, thread onto yarn needle

~ Pull yarn needle with string through 10 remaining sts, slide knitting needle out, and pull yarn tight to close

~ With wrong side (p side) facing you, sew back seam closed

~ Going by the chart, and using duplicate stitch method, apply cat face to front of hat




Ears


~ Cast on 2 sts

~ Row 1 - k 2 sts

~ Row 2 - kfb 1 st, k 1 st = 3 sts

~ Row 3 - k 3 sts

~ Row 4 - k 2 sts, kfb 1 st = 4 sts

~ Row 5 - k 4 sts

~ Row 6 - kfb 1 st, k 3 sts = 5 sts

~ Row 7 - k 5 sts

~ Row 8 - k 4 sts, kfb 1 st = 6 sts

~ Row 9-18 - k 6 sts

~ Row 19 - k2tog, k 4 sts = 5 sts

~ Row 20 - k 5 sts

~ Row 21 - k 3 sts, k2tog = 4 sts

~ Row 22 - k 4 sts

~ Row 23 - k2tog, k 2 sts = 3 sts

~ Row 24 - k 3 sts

~ Row 25 - k 1 st, k2tog = 2 sts

~ Row 26 - k 2 sts

~ Cast off

~ Fold ear in half, sew together by going up one side, over the tip, and down the other side

~ Sew the flat bottom to top side of hat

~ Make a second, identical ear

~ Weave in all ends
