Basic Knitted Jacket & Basic Knitted Beanie Pattern & pdf File

Supplies

~ Worsted weight yarn, 4-ply, any color you want

~ Size 8 (5 mm) knitting needles

~ Yarn needle

~ 4 buttons


Abbreviations

~ st - stitch

~ sts - stitches

~ k - knit

~ p - purl

~ yo - yarn over

~ kfb - knit front and back

~ stockinette sts - knit one row, purl one row

~ garter sts - knit all rows

~ k2tog - knit two stitches together

~ p2tog - purl two stitches together

Instructions


~ Basic Jacket ~

Back

~ Cast on 32 sts

~ Work 5 rows in garter sts

~ Rows 1-25 - work in stockinette sts, start first row with k

~ Row 26 - cast off 3 sts, p to end of row = 29 sts (first armhole formed)

~ Row 27 - cast off 3 sts, k to end of row = 26 sts (second armhole formed)

~ Rows 28-38 - work in stockinette sts

~ Row 39 - k 6 sts, cast off 14 sts, k 6 sts (back neckline formed)

~ Row 40-45 - work first 6 sts on needle in stockinette sts, cast off. Join yarn at beginning of second 6 sts on needle, work in stockinette sts, cast off (shoulders formed)


Left Front

~ Cast on 18 sts

~ Work 5 rows in garter sts

~ Row 1 - k across to end of row

~ Row 2 - k 5 sts for button band, p to end of row

~ Rows 3-26 - repeat rows 1 and 2

~ Row 27 - cast off 3 sts, k to end of row (armhole formed)

~ Row 28 - k 5 sts for button band, p to end of row

~ Row 29 - k across to end of row

~ Rows 30-43 - repeat rows 28 and 29

~ Row 44 – cast off 5 sts, p to end of row (button band finished)


~ Row 45 – k across to end of row


~ Cast off


Right Front

~ Cast on 18 sts

~ Work 5 rows in garter sts

~ Row 1 - k across to end of row

~ Row 2 - p to last 5 sts, k last 5 sts for button band

~ Rows 3-6 - repeat rows 1 and 2

~ Row 7 - k across to end of row

~ Row 8 - p to last 5 sts, k 1 st, k2tog, k 2 sts

~ Row 9 - k across to end of row

~ Row 10 - p to last 4 sts, k 2 sts, yo, k 2 sts (first button hole formed)

~ Rows 11-16 - repeat rows 1 and 2

~ Row 17 - k across to end of row

~ Rows 18-20 - repeat rows 8 to 10 (second button hole formed)

~ Rows 21-26 - repeat rows 1 and 2

~ Row 27 - k across to end of row

~ Row 28 - cast off 3 sts, p to last 5 sts, k 1 st, k2tog, k 2 sts (armhole formed)

~ Row 29 - k across to end of row

~ Row 30 - p to last 4 sts, k 2 sts, yo, k 2 sts (third button hole formed)

~ Rows 31-36 - repeat rows 1 and 2

~ Row 37 - k across to end of row

~ Rows 38-40 - repeat rows 8 to 10 (fourth button hole formed)

~ Rows 41-44 - repeat rows 1 and 2

~ Row 45 – cast off 5 sts, k to end of row (button band finished)


~ Cast off

~ With wrong side (p side) facing you, sew sides to back, but do not sew shoulders closed yet


Sleeves

~ With right side (k side) facing you, join yarn at the shoulder and pick up 22 sts, going down the armhole, over the side seam, and up the other armhole to the opposite shoulder

~ Rows 1-30 - work in stockinette sts, start first row with p

~ Work 5 rows in garter sts

~ Cast off

~ With wrong side (p side) facing you, sew sleeve seams and shoulder seams closed


Collar

~ With right side (k side) facing you, join yarn in st above button band and pick up 21 sts, going up and across the back neckline, and back down to the st above the button band on the other side

~ Work 5 rows in garter sts

~ Row 1 - kfb 1 st, k to last stkfb 1 st = 23 sts

~ Row 2 - k across

~ Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have 33 sts *

~ Cast off

* If you want a bigger collar, keep repeating rows 1 and 2 until the desired collar size is reached

~ Sew buttons to button band on left front side, directly across from button holes on right front side

~ Weave in all ends

~ Basic Beanie ~

~ Cast on 40 sts

~ Rows 1-3 - Work in garter sts

~ Row 4 - *k 4 sts, make 1 st*, repeat 10 times = 50 sts

~ Rows 5-20 - Work in stockinette sts; start row 5 with p

~ Row 21 - *p 3 sts, p2tog*, repeat until end of row = 40 sts

~ Row 22 - *k 2 sts, k2tog*, repeat until end of row = 30 sts

~ Row 23 - *p 1 st, p2tog*, repeat until end of row = 20 sts

~ Row 24 - *k2tog*, repeat until end of row = 10 sts

~ Cut long string, thread onto yarn needle

~ Pull yarn needle with string through 10 remaining sts, slide knitting needle out, and pull yarn tight to close

~ With wrong side (p side) facing you, sew back seam closed

~ Make a small pompom, fasten to top of beanie *

* Alternatively, you could make two pompoms and fasten them to two opposing sides of the beanie to make them look like ears, or you could simply eliminate the pompom altogether if you don't want to add one

~ Weave in all ends
