Sweetheart Dress - Pattern & pdf File

Supplies

~ Worsted weight yarn, 4-ply, any color you want

~ Size 8 (5.00 mm) knitting needles

~ Stitch holder

~ Yarn needle

~ 2 medium buttons

~ Sewing needle and thread; only needed if the holes of the buttons you choose are too small to be sewn on with the knitting yarn and the yarn needle


Abbreviations

~ st - stitch

~ sts - stitches

~ k - knit

~ p - purl

~ sl - slip stitch from the left needle to the right needle

~ sl2tog - slip 2 stitches together from the left needle to the right needle

~ psso - pass slipped stitch over

~ p2ssotog - pass two slipped stitches over together

~ k2tog - knit two stitches together 

~ yo - yarn over

~ stockinette sts - knit one row, purl one row

~ garter sts - knit all rows

Instructions

* Please note: The dress is worked from the bottom up *

Front

~ Cast on 61 sts

~ Row 1 - k 1 st, *sl 1 st, k 1 st, psso, k 3 sts, k2tog, p 3 sts*, repeat from * to * until end of row

~ Row 2 - k 4 sts, *p 5 sts, k 3 sts*, repeat from * to * until end of row

~ Row 3 - k 1 st, *sl 1 st, k 1 st, psso, k 1 st, k2tog, p 3 sts*, repeat from * to * until end of row

~ Row 4 - k 4 sts, *p 3 sts, k 3 sts*, repeat from * to * until end of row

~ Row 5 - k 1 st, *sl2tog, k 1 st, p2ssotog, p 3 sts*, repeat from * to * until end of row

* At this point, you should have 25 sts left on your knitting needle *

~ Rows 6-38 - work in stockinette sts, start row 6 with p

~ Row 39 - cast off 3 sts, k to end of row = 22 sts (first armhole formed)

~ Row 40 - cast off 3 sts, p to end of row = 19 sts (second armhole formed)

~ Rows 41-45 - work in stockinette sts

~ Row 46 - p 4 sts, k 11 sts, p 4 sts

~ Row 47 - k across to end of row

~ Row 48 - p 4 sts, cast off 11 sts, p 3 sts (front neckline formed)

~ Rows 49-54 - work the first 4 sts on knitting needle in stockinette sts (left shoulder formed)

~ Cast off

~ With right side (k side) facing you, join yarn in the first st of the 4 sts left on knitting needle

~ Work 6 rows in stockinette sts (right shoulder formed)

~ Cast off

* Please note: If you want your dress to be longer, add more rows between row 6 and row 38. Alternatively, you could decrease rows to turn the dress into a top. Don't forget to do the same for the back! *


Back


~ Cast on 61 sts

~ Work rows 1-38 identical to the front of the dress

* Please note: We are now dividing the back into two halves, in order to make two button bands *

Right Back Half:

~ Row 39 - cast off 3 sts (first armhole formed)
                 - k 9 sts,
                 - place 12 sts on stitch holder,
                 - cast on 5 sts (beginning of button band) = 15 sts

~ Row 40 - k 5 sts, p to end of row

~ Row 41 - k across to end of row

~ Row 42 - k 2 sts, k2tog, k 1 st, p to end of row

~ Row 43 - k across to end of row

~ Row 44 - k 2 sts, yo, k 2 sts, p to end of row (first buttonhole formed)

~ Row 45 - k across to end of row

~ Row 46 - k 5 sts, p across to end of row

~ Row 47 - k across to end of row

~ Row 48 - k 2 sts, k2tog, k 1 st, p to end of row

~ Row 49 - k across to end of row

~ Row 50 - k 2 sts, yo, k 2 sts, p to end of row (second buttonhole formed)

~ Row 51 - k across to end of row

~ Row 52 - k 5 sts, p across to end of row

~ Row 53 - k across to end of row

~ Row 54 - k 5 sts, p across to end of row

~ Cast off

Left Back Half:

~ Row 39 - place remaining 12 sts back on knitting needle,
                 - with wrong side (p side) facing you join yarn,
                 - cast off 3 sts (second armhole formed),
                 - p 3 sts, k 5 sts

~ Row 40 - k across to end of row

~ Row 41 - p 4 sts, k 5 sts

~ Rows 42-53 - repeat rows 40 and 41

~ Row 54 - k across to end of row

~ Cast off

~ With wrong side (p side) facing you, sew front to back, starting with the armholes and ending with the bottom hem


Sleeves

~ With right side (k side) facing you, join yarn at the shoulder and pick up 17 sts, going down the armhole, over the side seam, and up the other armhole to the opposite shoulder

~ Row 1 - p across to end of row

~ Row 2 - *k 1 st, kfb 1 st*, repeat from * to *, end row with k 1 st = 25 sts

~ Row 3 - p across to end of row

~ Row 4 - *k 1 st, kfb 1 st*, repeat from * to *, end row with k 1 st = 37 sts

~ Row 5 - p across to end of row

~ Rows 6-10 - work in garter sts

~ Cast off

~ With wrong side (p side) together, sew sleeve and shoulder seam closed

~ Sew buttons to button band on left back half, directly across from button holes on right back half

~ Weave in all ends
